When I was first introduced to Madison Malone’s I & II EP, I was attracted to her folk/pop sound but on her new EP, Songs I Wrote Before You, she has gone completely pop and I am living for it. In my gay opinion, it’s rare for a diva’s sophomore EP to be better than her first but Madison has accomplished just that.
“Monster Below” has a swaying beat that made me question if I clicked the right diva’s link and even the children’s chorus can’t tarnish this gem, however when the story telling on “How Many Times” shined through I knew this is a Madison Malone EP. The catchy-pop of “Digital Catastrophe” kicked in and I’d found the sound I love. “410 Miles” has an Alicia Keys “Girl On Fire” vibe and “8 Billion Drums” has a quirkiness that I’d expect on a Bjork album. “Love” ends the EP with the most Madison sounding track and a premonition of what her life would become.
If these are the songs she wrote before meeting her wife and becoming a mom, I can only hope she has more songs like this in the vault because this six-pack is pure gold.
