Last week, after four years of being a fan, I finally got to meet Chloe Moriondo at an album release event at the music store Rough Trade in New York City where they performed four acoustic songs (three off their new album and one of their classics), signed copies of their new album “oyster” and posed for pics. Chloe is extremely appreciative of their fans and spent quality time with everyone.
I first became aware of Chloe and their pop-rock sound on their album Blood Bunny. That caused me to go back into Chloe’s discography and discovered their acoustic and ukulele albums as well. It’s been three years since Chloe’s last album, Suckerpunch, which was much more experimental rock than previous albums. With “oyster”, Chloe’s style has once again developed and changed, proving no two Chloe Moriondo albums are ever the same.
Chloe’s new album, “oyster”, is closest to my usual go-to style of music. Chloe’s wispy vocals snuggle beautifully into this new electro-pop sound. The sound is synthesized and unique while Chloe’s lyrics are always fun yet personal. There is an ebb and flow to “oyster” which leave the listener floating and sometimes dancing through the album.
It’s rare for a diva to put out an album later in their career that is better than past albums. However, in my gay opinion, “oyster” is just like Chloe’s previous albums, one step ahead of and better than the one before.
