July of last year, Crys Matthews had a Kickstarter campaign to get her album Reclamation made. I backed the campaign, of course, wanting to get my autographed CD (I’m all about the signed merch). A huge perk of backing the campaign was getting a download of the album months before everyone else, so I’ve had it on heavy rotation.
Crys’ music looks back on history while hoping for a brighter future!
Reclamation has many social justice songs like Crys’ last album, Changemakers, but has quite a few love songs as well. The whole album is a proclamation of love to her country, her beliefs, her family and her relationships. She shares that love openly and honestly on every song, giving you all the feels.
Move over John and Yoko, Crys and Heather are this generation’s power couple of social change!
In my gay opinion, Crys’ songwriting is smart, strong and superb storytelling. Reclamation is music with a message and a positive vibe. The album maintains Crys’ folksy-pop sound and incredibly personal lyrics. She takes us on a journey through her roots, her fears and her hopes for the future.
You can always count on Crys to shine a light of truth on injustice while also shining a light of hope!
